Much of New Mexico is dry but the mountains can be heavily forested. This view is in the mountains south and east of Chama on Highway 64 heading toward Taos.
We drove toward Taos from the west and had to cross a famous bridge that spans the narrow and deep Rio Grande Gorge a few miles from Taos. The bridge was blocked by police and emergency vehicles were out on the bridge. Later we learned it was a suicide. Had to drive south 10 or 15 miles to the nearest bridge. Unknown to us the paved road turned to dirt for three miles to descend to the bottom of the gorge.
We finally crossed the Rio Grande on a tiny bridge and then had to drive 7 miles through the Rio Grande Recreation area before turning north back to Taos.
